Alabama Travel
Alabama Destination Guide Just 250 miles from north to south, ALABAMA ranges from the fast-flowing rivers, waterfalls and lakes of the Appalachian foothills to the subtropical bayous and white beaches of the Gulf Coast . Most of its industry is concentrated in the north, around rejuvenated Birmingham, and Huntsville, first home of the nation's space program. The sun-scorched farmlands of middle Alabama envelop sober Montgomery, the state capital.
Arkansas Destination Guide Though Arkansas encompasses the Mississippi Delta in the east, oil-rich timber lands in the south, and the sweeping Ouachita (Wash-i-taw) Mountains in the west, the cragged and charismatic Ozark Mountains in the north are its most scenic asset, where the main attractions for tourists are the uncrowded parks and unspoiled rivers. Incidentally, "Arkansas" is a distorted version of the name of a small Indian tribe; the state legislature declared once and for all in 1881 that the correct pronunciation is Arkansaw.

Florida Travel
Florida Destination Guide In at least one way it makes little difference when you visit : warm sunshine and blue skies are almost always a fact of life. Florida does, however, split into two climatic zones : subtropical in the south and warm temperate in the north. Orlando and points south have very mild winters (October to April), with warm temperatures and low humidity. This is the peak tourist season, when prices are at their highest. The southern summer (May to September), on the other hand, brings high humidity and afternoon storms - the rewards for braving the mugginess are lower prices and fewer tourists. Winter is the off-peak period north of Orlando; while snow has been known to fall in the Panhandle, daytime temperatures are generally comfortably warm. During the northern Florida summer, the crowds arrive, and the days - and the nights - get hot and sticky. Also, there is a potentially ominous time of the year - the " hurricane season " - June to November.

Georgia Travel
Georgia Destination Guide Atlanta's main rival as a tourist destination is the Georgia coast, stretching south from beautiful old Savannah via the sea islands to the semitropical Okefenokee Swamp, inland near Florida. In the northeast, the Appalachian foothills are particularly fetching in fall, while Athens has a reputation for producing offbeat rock groups such as REM and the B-52's. Further south, the agricultural heartlands are rich in musical history, but only Macon and ancient Ocmulgee provide reasons to stop.

Kentucky Travel
Kentucky Destination Guide Kentucky's rugged beauty is at its most appealing in the mountainous east and the small historic towns of the Bluegrass Downs, with visits enlivened by the varied attractions of bourbon whiskey, thoroughbred horses and bluegrass music. Louisville, home of the Kentucky Derby, is a busy manufacturing and arts center; the more reserved Lexington, eighty miles east, is a major horse-breeding market.
Mardi Gras Revelers can be found throughout
Louisiana during carnival season.

Louisiana Travel
Louisiana Destination Guide Though Louisiana was not physically scarred by the Civil War, with few important battles fought on its soil, its economy was ravaged, and its social structures all but destroyed. The Reconstruction era, too, hit particularly hard here, with the once great city of New Orleans suffering a period of unprecedented lawlessness and racial violence. In time the economy, at least, recovered, benefiting from the key importance of the mighty Mississippi River and the discovery of offshore oil, but over the last century Louisiana has come to rely more and more heavily upon tourism, centered around New Orleans and Cajun country. And it's not hard to see why: whether canoeing along a moss-tangled bayou, dining in a crumbling Creole cottage on spicy, buttery crawfish, or dancing on a steamy starlit night to the best live music in the world, few visitors fail to fall in love with Louisiana.
Mississippi Destination Guide While the major city is the capital, Jackson, historic river towns like Vicksburg and Natchez provide good reasons
to stay off the interstates, and blues fans will need no encouragement to go exploring sleepy Delta settlements
such as Alligator or Yazoo City.
TennTrips - North Carolina Directory(NEW) Geographically, North Carolina breaks down into three distinct areas - running from east to west, the coast, the Piedmont and the mountains - that help make it one of the more interesting states to tour around. For visitors, the coast is the most promising area, with good beaches, beautiful landscapes and a fascinating history. The inner coast consists largely of the less developed Albemarle Peninsula, with colonial Edenton nearby. The central Piedmont is dominated by manufacturing cities, and by the academic institutions of the prestigious Research Triangle: Raleigh, the state capital, is home to North Carolina State University. Duke University is at Durham, and the University of North Carolina at trendy Chapel Hill. Winston-Salem combines tobacco culture and Moravian heritage, while Charlotte bills itself as the next boom city of the South, though for the moment it's distinguished by little but its downtown skyscrapers. In the mountains, one of the most stunning stretches of Appalachia, the only towns of any size, Boone and Asheville, are linked by the spectacular Blue Ridge Parkway, while Great Smoky Mountains National Park overlaps the border with Tennessee.
TennTrips - South Carolina Directory South Carolina's fascinating subtropical coastline of sea islands, great beaches, marshes and lush palmetto groves preserves traces of a virtually independent black culture (featuring the unique patois gullah ), from the days when slaves escaped the mainland plantations. Beyond the grand old peninsular port of Charleston, arguably the most elegant city in the US with its rainbow-colored old buildings and magnificent, tree-lined avenues, restored plantations stretch as far north as Georgetown, en route toward the poseur's paradise of Myrtle Beach.
TennTrips - Tennessee Directory A shallow rectangle, only one hundred miles from north to south, TENNESSEE stretches 450 miles from the Mississippi to the Appalachians, and divides into three distinct regions. The marshy western third of the state occupies a low plateau edging down toward the Mississippi. Only in the far southwest corner do the bluffs rise high enough to permit a sizeable riverside settlement - the exhilarating port of Memphis . Tennessee's largest city is a magnet for music fans, as the birthplace of urban blues and long-time home of Elvis . The fine plantation homes and tidy old towns of middle Tennessee 's rolling farmland reflect the comfortable lifestyle of its pioneers; smack at the heart of this is Nashville, still country music's capital, despite upstart competition from Branson and Myrtle Beach. The mountainous east shares its top attraction with North Carolina - the peaks, streams and meadows of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Texas Destination Guide Preconceived ideas about what exactly is "Texan" are soon shattered. It's actually one of the most eclectic and cosmopolitan states in the Union and each of the major tourist destinations has its own distinct character. Hispanic San Antonio, for example, with its Mexican population and historic importance, has a laid-back feel absent from the big-city neurosis of Houston or Dallas, while trendy Austin revels in a lively music scene and intellectualism found nowhere else in the state.
Virginia Destination Guide Richmond itself was largely destroyed in the war; today it's a small city, with some good museums, and is the best starting point for seeing Virginia. The bulk of the colonial sites are concentrated just to the east, in what is known as the Historic Triangle . Here the remains of Jamestown, the original colony, Williamsburg, the restored colonial capital, and Yorktown, site of the final battle of the Revolutionary War, lie within half an hour's drive of each other. Another historic center, Thomas Jefferson's Charlottesville, sits at the foot of the gorgeous Blue Ridge Mountains, an hour west of Richmond. An attractive small college town in its own right, it's also within easy reach of the natural splendors of Shenandoah National Park and the little towns of the western valleys. Northern Virginia, often visited as a day-trip from Washington DC, features several posh suburbs and a number of restored historic homes, the closest colonial architecture to the capital in Alexandria, and Manassas, the scene of two important Civil War battles.
West Virginia Destination Guide The people of WEST VIRGINIA are only half joking when they call their state the Ireland of the US. Generally poor and almost entirely rural, it shares a similar history of exploitation by outside powers, with timber and coalmining companies taking advantage of the rich natural resources while giving little in return. But, quite apart from the almost Third World deprivation which endures in some areas, West Virginia is also, in places at least, incredibly beautiful, and can boast the longest white-water rivers and most extensive wilderness areas in the eastern US. The extreme topography, which has historically isolated its inhabitants, now makes the state a popular destination for hikers and outdoors enthusiasts, and the moonshiners of old have been replaced by ski instructors and mountain-bike guides.
