Safety, jobs hot topics at VY decommissioning meeting

Entergy announced last year its plans to close the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant in Vernon by the end of 2014, but nearby residents are still skeptical of how the site will be maintained and decontaminated in the coming decades. At a public informational meeting on Thursday, Pete Szacik, of Keene, seemed critical of the decades-long period spent fuel would have to remain stored on the property and Windham Regional Commission Executive Director Chris Campany stood up to ask about the likelihood of the land being used again while the cooled fuel is in dry cask storage.

Faucher: Hinsdale OTB won't open due to my illness

Due to a personal illness, Bill Faucher will be unable to open his off-track betting parlor in Hinsdale, N.H., according to a story on reformer.com . Faucher, a former USTA director, had recently secured a gambling license from the state of New Hampshire, but will be forced to postpone the opening of his facility until another owner can be found.

A Hinsdale man will spend the next one to four years behind bars for attacks on three women earlier this year. Nathan R. Fiset, 21, pleaded guilty in Cheshire County Superior Court in Keene to three counts of second-degree domestic assault, as well as single counts of simple assault, criminal mischief and violation of a protective order.

Hinsdale police enjoying on-body cameras

Officer Charles Johnson, of the Hinsdale Police Department, is cruising down Brattleboro Road at around 11:20 a.m. on Wednesday when he spots a blue Subaru Outback driving in the opposite direction with a busted headlight. Johnson turns around, activates his lights and the Subaru promptly pulls over.

Spofford child porn suspect agrees to plead guilty

A Spofford, N.H., man accused of possessing child pornography has agreed to plead guilty to one count of transportation of child pornography. According to documents filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Hampshire, Daniel E. Erickson, 39, could spend between five and 20 years in prison for the offense.
