Jasper County, S.C., accepts same-sex marriage licenses

Same-sex couples in South Carolina are eligible to apply for marriage licenses for the first time, and Monday afternoon two men from Savannah became the first couple to apply for a license in Jasper County. At around 12:45 p.m., at the Jasper County Courthouse, Robert Turner, 50, and Erik Moen, 47, finished signing the paperwork.

The Edgefield County Sheriff's Office responded to a residence on Rainbow Falls Road in North Augusta , Friday, Nov. 21, after a call came into law enforcement that 3 unknown males and two vehicles were in the driveway of the residence. While deputies were in route to the scene, an additional call came in that said one of the males had identified himself to the homeowner and said he was at the residence because he had stolen a four wheeler and was waiting on another person to come and help him.

A standoff involving a North Augusta man with a gun ended in his arrest Saturday at a home on Crestlyn Drive. A 37-year-old woman, who lives in the house, said the subject forced his way into her home after shooting was heard in the street.

Two killed in North Augusta house fire

Vernon Hapner, 35, and Todd M. Morris, 45, both of 1018 Womrath Road, were pronounced dead at University Hospital in Augusta at 12:10 a.m. Thursday, according to Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton. When North Augusta Department of Public Safety responded to the home, one person was found unresponsive outside of the home, according to a press release from Aiken County Sheriff Office Capt.

RECing Crew of North Augusta recognized as an 'Angel' among charities

The RECing Crew of North Augusta is one of the most generous and responsible charities in the Palmetto State based on the 19th annual Scrooges and Angels list, which South Carolina Secretary of State Mark Hammond released in Columbia on Wednesday. 'We're thrilled; this means an awful lot to us,' said The RECing Crew's president, Pam Stickler, of her organization's designation as an Angel.

North Augusta man jailed on meth, false info charges

A North Augusta man jailed on drug charges also was charged with giving false information after he gave an officer several different names, according to the Aiken County Sheriff's Office. Andrew Torel Rouse, 25, of Casalina Road, was charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, giving false information to police and a warrant for third-degree assault and battery.

Council moves forward with installing ePole

North Augusta City Council moved forward with authorizing the City to enter an option and lease agreement to have a new ePole installed downtown on first and second reading. The City was approached by EnerSphere Communications, LLC to place the small cell infrastructure, which City Administrator Todd Glover said is nothing like a cell tower.

Greeneway repair on track to be completed by March

According to Rick Meyer, director of North Augusta Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services, the City issued a notice to proceed last Monday to Beam's Contracting. The Greeneway is a 9-plus mile paved, recreational trail that follows an abandoned railroad right-of-way purchased by the City in 1988.

Fisher home to be featured on tour

The 27th annual North Augusta Christmas Tour of Homes, sponsored by Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, will be celebrated Dec. 5 and 6. The tour begins with a candlelight tour Dec. 5 from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. and continues Dec. 6 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tom and Margaret Fisher relocated to North Augusta in 2007 from Brunswick, Georgia, to be near family after living on the Georgia coast for 17 years. So impressed with the neighborhood, they chose the River Club as their new location.

Annual Christmas parade set for Dec. 14

The North Augusta Evening Lions Club will host the Christmas parade Dec. 14 at 2 p.m., along the same route as in past years. In the 1950 to 1964 period, the parade was sponsored by the Augusta and North Augusta Jaycees with the parade route running down Georgia Avenue, across the 13th Street Bridge and down Broad Street.

On Oct. 27, the Trenton Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution had the pleasure of welcoming Lynn Thompson, Director of the Living History Park located in North Augusta as our guest speaker. She presented an out standing program on the Revolutionary War in our area that was exciting, as well as entertaining and extremely informative.
