North Augusta files answer to wrongful death suit

The North Augusta Department of Public Safety denied allegations that one of its officers refused orders to terminate a vehicle chase in February that ended with the shooting death of an Edgefield County man and stated that the case should be filed in Aiken County, according to court documents. An attorney for the agency last week answered the wrongful death suit filed against North Augusta Public Safety, Edgefield County and the Edgefield County Sheriff's Office by Anthony Satterwhite, who is representing the estate of his brother, Ernest Satterwhite.

A report of a suspicious vehicle at Wiley Place in Clarks Hill led to an arrest Sunday, Oct. 26. According to an Edgefield County Sheriff's Office report on the matter, a neighbor of an abandoned residence at the aforementioned address notified law enforcement that a suspicious vehicle was parked behind the vacant residence. Upon arriving on the scene, responding law enforcement observed a white male in his mid-twenties walking from behind the residence carrying an unknown object in his hand.

One killed in single vehicle crash

Greenwood County Coroner Sonny Cox has identified the victim as 28-year-old Steven Newman Riley of North Augusta. Riley died as the result of blunt force trauma sustained in the accident, Cox said.

Woman reports medication stolen after helping stranger

A North Augusta woman reported prescription painkillers stolen from her home after she let in a stranger who asked to use her phone, according to the Aiken County Sheriff's Office. The incident happened at about 6 p.m. Sunday at a home on Celeste Avenue, according to a sheriff's report.

Special Olympic athlete crowned homecoming king

A big honor was given for one River Bluff High student who is now homecoming royalty. At halftime of Friday's matchup between River Bluff and North Augusta, Brady Platt was crowned homecoming king by the Riverbluff High student body.

An Edgefield County man reported his dog stolen to the Edgefield County Sheriff's Office, Thursday, Oct. 23. According to the ECSO report, the man went out to feed his dog Thursday morning and found the dog was gone. The dog was reportedly kept on a chain from which it was incapable of freeing itself.

An Aiken man and woman reported identity theft Wednesday after learning that someone contacted the Social Security office and changed information on their benefits. A 26-year-old North Augusta woman declined to press charges against her husband after, she reported, he slammed her head into a stove and tried to strangle her during an argument over dishes.

Two arrested after gas station robbery

Ronald Reco Ashley, 26, and Alvin Howard, 22, both of Jackson, were arrested during a traffic stop shortly after the incident occurred, according to North Augusta Public Safety. Ashley is charged with armed robbery, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, possession of a weapon with an obliterated serial number and possession of crack cocaine.

North Augusta man pleads guilty to child porn charges

A North Augusta man pleaded guilty Wednesday to possession of child pornography, according to the U.S. attorney's office. James O'Neal Arthur, 57, entered his plea in federal court in Columbia and will be sentenced after a judge has reviewed a report by the U.S. Probation Office.
