Council passes budget on first reading, votes down millage increase

In a regularly scheduled meeting, Council voted 7-0 in favor of the budget put forth by North Augusta City Administrator Todd Glover on first of three readings. The budget does not include a 2.36 mill increase to help replenish the City's capital projects fund, nor does it include a 0.32 mill increase to buy air pack upgrades for Public Safety.

Congressional and local leaders are applauding the release of a long-awaited report that deems Yucca Mountain a safe location for nuclear waste storage, which they believe could get the ball rolling in relocating waste stored at the Savannah River Site. On Thursday, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission published Volume 3 of its safety evaluation report on the proposed underground geologic nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain, a volcanic structure near the former Nevada Test Site, about 100 miles from Las Vegas.

Despite challenges, parks and rec departments have positive outlook on future

Aiken County, the City of North Augusta and the City of Aiken are blessed to have governments that believe in parks and recreation, said Rick Meyer, the director of the City of North Augusta's Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services. Parks and recreation departments are responsible for providing community programs, maintaining the upkeep of surrounding parks and spotting potential tourism activities that not only draw in money, but visitors, too.

A 28-year-old Aiken woman reported Thursday a juvenile threw rocks toward her vehicle at the intersection of May Royal Drive and Columbia Highway N. Officers responded Friday to a well-being check and suspicious person call on Robert M. Bell Parkway in Aiken. The 83-year-old man reportedly told officers he didn't know where he was and was reported missing in North Carolina.

Crime Blotter

A convenience store on Hwy 378 West in McCormick was the site of a strong armed robbery, Tuesday, Oct. 14. According to an Edgefield County Sheriff's Office report, a woman stopped at the store and asked the clerk for directions to Callison Hwy. After getting the directions, the woman then retrieved a drink from the cooler.

North Augusta moves forward with parking deck

In a special called meeting, Council passed in a 6-0 vote to authorize entering into a development agreement with SPS North Augusta LLC. Councilman David McGhee was not present for the vote. Council convened for a little less than an hour in executive session to go over the contract.

A 37-year-old North Augusta man was stabbed in the rib cage during an argument with another man Thursday, according to the Aiken County Sheriff's Office. The incident happened about 7:20 p.m. at a home on Celeste Avenue, according to a sheriff's report.

McMillan leads by three heading into final round of WEGA Senior Championship

According to an upcoming release email blast from the North Augusta Chamber of Commerce, the store, located at 1041 Edgefield Road, will have a grad opening ribbon cutting ceremony 7:30 that day. The employees at the Wal-Mart location have been in the store since Sept.
