New Coalition Urges FEA to Drop Lawsuit Over Voucher Program

With the future of Florida's Tax Credit Scholarship hanging by a thread, a statewide coalition is sending a message to the Florida Education Association and the Florida School Board Association: Don't get rid of the state's voucher program. On Wednesday, a group of parents, faith-based leaders and school choice advocates, forming the Save Our Scholarships Coalition, announced it would be launching a new campaign to urge the FEA and the FSBA to drop its lawsuit against the Tax Credit Scholarship program.

Downpour soaks Palm Coast

Just days after flooding in East Volusia, heavy rains drenched Palm Coast on Friday afternoon, dumping nearly 9 inches, flooding the W section and prompting the rescue of a couple motorists whose cars became stranded in high water. Palm Coast officials said they received rain ranging from 4 inches to 8.9 inches throughout the city.

Deputies: Physician's assistant blocked helicopter landing at Volusia crash scene

A Volusia County certified physician's assistant who told deputies “I always go around firetrucks” was taken to jail after refusing to move his car to allow a sheriff's helicopter to land at the scene of a fatal vehicle crash, according to his arrest report. James Allen, 52 - who works at Urgent Care in Ormond Beach - was charged Thursday with failure to obey police/fire department and resisting an officer without violence, both misdemeanors, court records show.

Coastal Volusia cities still battle flooding, despite millions in improvements

Back in May 2009, people who live in the low-lying neighborhoods flanking Nova Road were slogging through nearly waist-high floodwaters after more than 20 inches of rain fell in less than a week. On Wednesday morning, after close to 8 inches of rain had fallen in 24 hours, residents who live along thoroughfares such as Caroline Street and other roads feeding into Orange Avenue and Bellevue Avenue were splashing through ankle-high and knee-high water.

SDeveloper begins work on 144-unit student housing complex near Embry-Riddle

DAYTONA BEACH AValdosta, Georgia-based developer has begun clearing land for a planned apartment complex that will be primarily intended for use by students at nearby Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. The planned 144-unit Eagle Landing Apartments is on a 9-acre site at 1479 Shady Place, immediately south of the Lohman Funeral Home Daytona/Daytona Memorial Park complex, just east of Embry-Riddle's planned aviation/aerospace research park.

Heavy rainfall floods streets in Volusia County

A flood warning expired at 11:30 a.m. for North Central Volusia County, which includes South Daytona, Port Orange, Ormond Beach, Holly Hill and Daytona Beach. Each of those cities saw widespread flooding overnight and into the morning.

Children make shofars at Ormond synagogue as Rosh Hashana nears

About 50 kids prepared to ring in the start of year 5775 with the bellowing sounds of ram's horns Sunday morning at Chabad Lubavitch of Greater Daytona. The horn-based instruments, known as shofar, are a central part of the Jewish new year celebration, Rosh Hashana, which begins at sundown Wednesday and ends Friday at nightfall.

When you step into the studio of Terri Lawson at The Hub on Canal Street, it's like walking into an enchanted forest, complete with a variety of flora and fauna. There are paper crafted four-legged creatures and birds - owls included - on the floor and shelves, from the ceiling hangs a floating floral centerpiece and the rest of the space is adorned with a variety of floral creations and animals.

Volusia, Flagler veterans face huge backlog on VA disability claims

Vince Faulkner has been waiting for more than two years for the Department of Veterans Affairs to process his disability benefits appeal. When he calls to check his status, the phone rings eight times and then it cuts off, said Faulkner, a 54-year-old Ormond Beach resident who served in the U.S. Navy during the 1980s, working in engine rooms that he says led to problems in his legs.
