QCC takes major step toward satellite in Blackstone Valley

Blackstone Valley civic leaders have been trying for more than a quarter century to bring higher education to the region. At a reception Monday at Alternatives' Whitin Mill, hosted by the Blackstone Valley Chamber of Commerce, a major step forward was announced with the award of $300,000 from the state Department of Higher Education to help Quinsigamond Community College plan and design a satellite in Northbridge.

38 Southbridge students missed chance to retake MCAS

Last year, dozens of juniors at the middle-high school were not afforded their mandated right to twice retake the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment Systems, first-year Superintendent Patricia Gardner said. At present, 38 of 105 seniors need to pass from one to as many as all three portions of the MCAS, and/or need for officials to develop an Educational Proficiency Plan for them.

Southbridge rape suspect believed to have fled the state

The search for a 26-year-old alleged child rapist impacted activities for at least three area school districts Friday, but Police Chief Daniel R. Charette said investigators believe the man got what he wanted from his home on Brentwood Drive and likely fled the state Thursday. Police said they were called to the home just before 6 p.m. Thursday, where the suspect, Gregory Lewis, allegedly assaulted his stepfather.

A man awaiting child rape charges who has been on the run from police since cutting off his GPS monitoring device made a violent reappearance Thursday night, police said. Southbridge man accused of raping 6-year-old boy

Investigators say a 44-year-old Southbridge man raped a 6-year-old boy over a period of time. Charles McCue of 18 Snow St., Southbridge, was ordered held on $25,000 bail Tuesday in Dudley District Court on three counts of rape of a child with force, three counts of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14, and one count each of reckless endangerment of a child, providing obscene material to a minor and witness intimidation.

RRI to hold 21st annual road race Oct. 5 in Sturbridge

Rehabilitative Resources Inc., one of Central Massachusetts' leading providers of services for people living with developmental disabilities, will hold its 21st annual Rise and Run Road Race on Sunday, Oct. 5 in Sturbridge. The 10k and 5k races begin at 9 a.m., and the one-mile race starts at 10:30 a.m. The cost of the race is $20 for adults and $15 for kids under 16 in advance, and $25 for adults and $20 for kids under 16 for those registering on the day of the race.
