Police union alleges Southbridge town manager made threat, demands retraction

Over dinner at a Dudley restaurant earlier this month, acting Town Manager Kevin E. Paicos met with the police chief and two police officials who were up for promotions. Comments Mr. Paicos allegedly made during that dinner have led to a complaint by leaders of the police union to the Town Council, and a demand that Mr. Paicos make a retraction.

Ex-wife allegedly slugs North Brookfield man with dumbbell

A North Brookfield man was hospitalized and his wife was charged after she allegedly struck him in the head with a 5-pound dumbbell Sunday night. Joanne Kelman, 65, of 61 Gilbert St., North Brookfield, called police shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday to report that her ex-husband had assaulted her.

Southbridge man arraigned in stabbing

A 60-year-old man pleaded not guilty Monday to charges he stabbed a man Saturday afternoon on Henry Street. Ramon Baez, 1191 2 West St., second-floor rear apartment, was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault to murder.

Acting DPW director to relinquish reins in Southbridge

Heather A. Blakeley, who has been working as acting director of public works and civil engineer, has tendered her resignation from the former role, saying she doesn't foresee progress on getting a reciprocal professional engineer license. Ms. Blakeley is a licensed professional engineer in New York, but under town rules needs a Massachusetts license to run the DPW.

We have been following the tale of Worcester's missing gargoyles with some interest. The stone creatures haven't been seen in public since they were removed in 2006 - for structural and safety reasons - from atop the former Chestnut Street Congregational Church.

Hope emerges in search for Worcester's missing gargoyles

The search for the missing gargoyles from a historic church in the city has produced a new lead and a ray of hope that they may be returned. Deborah Packard, executive director of Preservation Worcester, told the Historical Commission Thursday night that all eight gargoyles were sold by the Monson Savings Bank.

Southbridge-based Aeroventure Institute recognized as top 10 flight school in U.S.

The AeroVenture Institute Flight Training & Aerospace Learning Center, owned and operated by the Allen family of Worcester, has been recognized for its excellence in flight training by The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, the world's largest aviation association. The flight school has been awarded the title of Outstanding Flight School for the second year in a row and is one of only ten flight schools in the U.S., and the only in Massachusetts, to earn this recognition out of 1,447 flight training schools across the country.

Webster hospital emergency care reopens with new face

A SWAT team converged on a North Street apartment building to arrest an armed man who was wanted for not appearing in court earlier this year. Lee Daniels, 35, of 65 North St., was arrested about 2:30 a.m. Monday.

Worcester church searches for missing set of 8-foot gargoyles

Eight massive gargoyles have gone missing from a Worcester church, prompting an ongoing investigation by church officials to figure out where these 3,000-pound statues have ended up since they were taken down several years ago. The 8-foot-tall gargoyles were taken down from the exterior of the Liberty Church on Chestnut Street in 2006, and an agreement between the city and the church stated that they would be stored in the basement so they could be replaced on the church at a later date, said Deborah Packard, executive director for Preservation Worcester.

In a 3-0 vote, selectmen Monday approved a logging permit for Streeter Road for salvage of trees damaged and downed by the June 2011 tornado. Independent forester W. Scott Gerrish explained the forestry plan to selectmen.
