Police: Veteran beaten by man he met at bar dies

White's longtime partner, Alex Teal, had said White had most of both arms amputated after he was severely burned in a hotel room that caught fire when he was attacked by a man last Sunday. Lee Smith, Terrance Mann to receive NC awards

The state Literary and Historical Association is presenting the North Carolina Book Awards this year to novelist Lee Smith of Hillsborough, Broadway veteran Terrance Mann and others during its annual meeting in New Bern. Historic church closes after 220 years

The First Presbyterian Church of Swannanoa, founded in 1794, closed its doors for good Sunday. Church officials said in recent years the congregation dwindled down to just 33 people and there was not enough money to keep the church open.
