| Atlanta's main rival as a tourist destination is the Georgia coast, stretching south from beautiful old Savannah via the sea islands to the semitropical Okefenokee Swamp, inland near Florida. In the northeast, the Appalachian foothills are particularly fetching in fall, while Athens has a reputation for producing offbeat rock groups such as REM and the B-52's. Further south, the agricultural heartlands are rich in musical history, but only Macon and ancient Ocmulgee provide reasons to stop.. | Georgia Travel

From the Golden Isles to the Chattahoochee National Forest, from small-town main streets to the Atlanta skyline, Georgia is home to a remarkably diverse scenic heritage woven together by an extensive system of roads and highways. The Georgia Scenic Byways Program is a community-driven effort which seeks to preserve this legacy of treasured places in a way that enhances economic development.
Russell-Brasstown National Scenic Byway
US Forest: Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest Length: 40.6 miles / 65.4 km
Time to Allow: Three hours to enjoy the byway.
Located within the Chattahoochee National Forest in northeast Georgia, the Russell Brasstown Scenic Byway is a 41-mile loop revealing some of the most dramatic scenery in the state. The Russell-Brasstown route was awarded National Scenic Byway Designation on June 15, 2000.
Surrounded by the beauty of the Chattahoochee National Forest, the byway winds through the valleys and mountain gaps of the southern Appalachians. From the vistas atop Brasstown Bald, to the cooling mists of waterfalls, scenic wonders fill this region. Hike the Appalachian Trail or fish in a cool mountain stream.
This route includes Brasstown Bald, Georgia's highest mountain. Located near the byway is the Bavarian-themed town of Helen. Following State Highways 348, 180, and 17/75, the loop encircles Wildlife Management Areas, the headwaters of the Chattahoochee River, and a section of the Appalachian Trail. Nearby Vogel and Unicoi State Parks offer numerous recreational opportunities in addition to the camping, fishing and hiking facilities found along the Byway.

Altamaha Historic Scenic Byway
Length: 17.0 miles / 27.4 km
Time to Allow: 1 hour
Following State Route 99 and US 17, the Altamaha Historic Scenic Byway runs for 17 miles through McIntosh and Glynn Counties and the City of Darien. Traveling from the Sapelo Island Visitors Center to the historic Needwood Church and School, the Byway passes Fort King George, Butler Island and Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantations, the Darien waterfront, sweeping marsh views, and majestic Live Oaks draped with Spanish Moss. This Byway lets visitors explore both the rich cultural heritage and the diverse marsh ecosystems found along Georgia's coast.
The Altamaha Historic Scenic Byway displays a collage of history; from Guale Indians and 16th and 17th century Spanish missionaries to the pre-colonial occupation of Fort King George; from hardy Scottish Highland soldiers and colonists to the rice and cotton planters who succeeded them. Descendants of early African slaves who built the nineteenth-century plantations live in the area today, contributing their culture and traditions to life in communities scattered along the byway. The Geechee community still survives on Sapelo Island and descendants of the 177 Scottish Highlanders who first settled Darien are scattered throughout McIntosh County. Enhanced by the archaeological remnants of a long ago era, this byway adds a rich cultural and historical note to the ecological beauty found in the present.

Andersonville National Historic Site
Andersonville, or Camp Sumter as it was officially known, was one of the largest of many Confederate military prisons established during the Civil War. During the 14 months of its existence (1864-1865), more than 45,000 Union soldiers were confined here, of which nearly 13,000 died from disease, poor sanitation, malnutrition, overcrowding, or exposure to the elements. Today, Andersonville is the only park in the National Park System to serve as a memorial to all American prisoners of war throughout the nation's history. Site includes Andersonville National Cemetery which has 16,000 interments (1,004 unidentified). From Darren Smith, for About.com
Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park
A major Confederate victory on Chickamauga Creek in Georgia, September 19-20, 1863, was countered by Union victories at Orchard Knob, Lookout Mountain, and Missionary Ridge in Chattanooga, Tennessee, November 23-25, 1863. This was the first and the largest national military park established by Congress at the end of the 19th century. Activities: Chickamauga Battlefield features a seven-mile self-guiding auto tour, monuments, historical tablets, hiking trails and horse trails. The visitor center contains exhibits and a 26 minute multi-media program, the Battle of Chickamauga, that provides unique orientation to this Civil War battle. Lookout Mountain Battlefield contains monuments, historical tablets, hiking trails, scenic vistas, and the historic Cravens House. The Lookout Mountain Battlefield Visitor Center also houses the "Battle Above the Clouds" painting by James Walker. Ranger-guided car tours allow visitors to drive through the historic battleground, stopping along the way to discover the story of the Battle of Chickamauga.
