South Carolina Weather With Live Radar by Region
South Carolina's fascinating subtropical coastline of sea islands, great beaches, marshes and lush palmetto groves preserves traces of a virtually independent black culture (featuring the unique patois gullah ), from the days when slaves escaped the mainland plantations. Beyond the grand old peninsular port of Charleston, arguably the most elegant city in the US with its rainbow-colored old buildings and magnificent, tree-lined avenues, restored plantations stretch as far north as Georgetown, en route toward the poseur's paradise of Myrtle Beach. |

Scenic Drives in South Carolina
From NSBP
Ashley River Road (Hwy 61, Northwest of Charleston)
Length: 11.0 miles / 17.7 km Time to Allow: 25 minutes to drive the byway or two days to visit places along the way. The Ashley River Road passes by three national historic landmarks -- Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church, Drayton Hall and Middleton Place -- as it traverses a National Register Historic District that traces the history of European and African settlement, commerce and industry from their colonial origins to the present. Covering a distance of only eleven miles, the Ashley River Road is a journey into the history, culture, and beauty of the South Carolina lowcountry. Ancient live oaks, Spanish moss stirring in a warm summer breeze, and elegant brick gates hinting at the architecture within hearken back to days gone by. The Ashley River Road itself reflects the history and culture that has been at home along this great river. As you drive through the brick gates of Drayton Hall and pass under live oaks dripping with Spanish moss, you may feel as though you are heading back in time. Indeed, this preserved estate will show you the ins and outs of plantation life through a forty-five minute interpretive tour given by professionally trained tour guides. The architecture-lover in you will be inspired by the original mantelpieces, pilasters, and wood floors. Self-guided tours lead you along the banks of the Ashley River, a State Scenic River, as it flows by under the overhanging trees. Drayton Hall, with programs like "Connections: From Africa to America," brings to life the landscape and culture of this area. However, it is only the beginning. Its two story portico is one of the first of its kind in the nation and the main house itself is the oldest unrestored plantation house that is open to the public in America. The museum shop offers distinctive low country crafts, food products and other unique items.
Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway (Hwy 11 between Gaffney & Fair Play SC)
Once known as "Keowee Path" or "Cherokee Path," this 130-mile road was used by the Cherokees and the English and French fur traders. Looming majestically beyond the low, soft hills of the Piedmont, the Blue Ridge escarpment thrills the soul of the mountain lover. The Cherokees called these heights "the Great Blue Hills of God" and the stream-laced foothills and rugged mountains of the Blue Ridge run throughout the area. This Byway is perfect for the outdoors lover, running through the wide-ranging Nantahala and Sumter National Forests full of recreational opportunities. See for yourself why the Cherokee meaning for Nantahala is land of the noonday sun. Take a chance to play in nearby lakes by swimming or whitewater rafting. If exploring the forests by foot is more your thing, hike on any of the numerous trails. The numerous parks scattered around the area invite you to explore them, from the area's most notable landmark at Table Rock State Park, to King's Mountain National Military Park. Striking landscapes and abundant recreation are available in all the parks, but Caesar's Head State Park is well known for its beautiful vistas, numerous hiking trails and the stunning Raven Cliff Falls. Enjoy a picnic lunch while taking in the beauty of cascading water over rugged cliffs or act like a kid again while crunching through a pile of autumn leaves.
